Antonis B. Petropoulos, Director. EcoClub : The International Ecotourism Club.
Antonis serves as the Director of ECOCLUB - International Ecotourism Club, a network promoting ecological & social change in Tourism, which he founded in 1999 in Athens, Greece, now with Members in over 80 countries. He is also the webmaster of the award-winning website www.ecoclub.com, a leading ecotourism portal. Through ECOCLUB, Antonis is involved with the online promotion of leading Ecolodges and key international events, critical travel journalism & news coverage, the day to day support to ecotourism professionals & academics, the funding & support of community projects undertaken by the Members of ECOCLUB, as well as e-commerce (ecological & organic products from Greece).
In 2007 he participated in the Greek Ministry of Tourism workgroup which evaluated the new proposed national tourism marketing plan of Greece. From January 2008 and for one year, he was coordinator for Tourism for the Ecologists-Greens party of Greece, drafting policy proposals & press releases and organizing various workshops & events.
He has been an invited speaker at many international & national events including the European Union Environmental Governance Conference (Volos, Greece 2003), the World Leisure Congress (Hangzhou, China 2006), the World Ecotourism Summit (Oslo, Norway, 2007), the Tallinn University Activities & Recreation Conference (Tallinn, Estonia, 2007), the European Greens Tourism & Climate Change Conference (Brussels, July 2008) and the Tourism & Ecology Conference (Chania, Greece Oct 2008) which he also co-organized. In recent months he has lectured in Samos, Greece and Leeds University (Jan 2009). Antonis has also appeared live on over a dozen Greek radio stations and interviewed by international newspapers & magazines on Greek tourism issues as well as on Ecotourism. He has also conducted over 70 interviews with international Tourism & Environment leaders and Ecotourism pioneers.
Antonis was born in Athens in 1969. He holds a B.Sc. in Economics and an M.Sc. in Economic History, both from the London School of Economics and an M.Sc. in Shipping Trade and Finance from the Cass Business School, City University, London. Before founding ECOCLUB he worked in the Shipping industry. He is a Lifetime Member of the World Leisure Organisation and a member of various NGOs, societies and networks (TIES, Tri-Net, SETE). A vegetarian whose hobbies (naturally) include gardening, but also philosophy and wine-making.
