WIND POWER at Rosalie Forest
As well as needing power and wishing to utilise all forms of renewable energy, we also want to show people what is possible with natural forms of energy.
Our forest accommodations are too far from the main property to make use of our solar and hydro systems, and in the jungle there is not enough sunlight or water to use them there. There is however, some wind above the rainforest canopy.
We have installed an Air-X 400 wind turbine, at the top of a 100 foot tree, towering over the canopy, close to the tree house
The turbine is capable of supplying up to 400 watts, and we have installed it using two Trojan L-16, 375 AMP hour deep cycle batteries, which provide power to each room.
Every building in the forest now has a 12 volt, 12 watt light, sufficient to light the room, without spoiling the whole natural jungle experience which we wish to keep authentic.
As music is not permitted in the forest, in order to protect the wildlife, power outlets are not provided.
The wind turbine, which provides the power sits 100 feet above at the top of the canopy, but the wind in the area is barely sufficient for our small machine. Also, as our lodge has expanded, so have our power needs in the forest, and really we need more power, because the turbine we installed initially is no longer large enough for our needs. so we plan soon, to climb up the canopy and add some solar panels to the system; Meanwhile please enjoy the ntural light and lamps if the power is not always working.
If the power is working well, we are proud to show you what is possible in such remote and complicated locations, and if it is not working so well, we think it is good for all to experience natural nights in the jungle, living with the nature and necessities, and appreciating that we can all live happily and comfortably with less power, if we want to.
